Does losing weight automatically mean better health? | Weight Loss Tips

Does losing weight automatically mean better health?

It's impossible to ignore the countless weight-loss messages we're exposed to on TV, in the doctor's office, on the Internet, and on the magazine covers we see at the grocery store checkout. Clearly, as a society, we place a high priority on being thin. But losing weight may not always lead to better health.

If you're at (or close to) normal weight and in good health, losing a few pounds is unlikely to improve your health. What's more, even if you're overweight or obese, some studies suggest that losing weight may not automatically mean better health or a longer life. The results may depend on your general health and how you lose weight. [Weight Loss Tips]

There are healthy and unhealthy ways to lose weight. Unfortunately, some methods that produce quick initial results can often backfire on both your health and weight in the long run. These include:

  • very low calorie diets
  • Liquid diets or long-term fasts
  • Low-protein fad diets (for example, eating only vegetables or fruits for several days in a row)
  • Use “fat burner” supplements

Many of these weight-loss strategies don't provide enough essential nutrients—those the body can't make on its own—to meet nutritional needs. When this happens, you may feel hungry, fatigued, notice dry skin and hair loss, among other difficulties. In addition, you will have a higher risk of losing bone mass and muscle. Worst of all, there's a good chance you'll gain back all the weight you've lost, and more.

It's not too hard to suggest that, over time, if your body doesn't get the nutrition it needs while you're losing weight, you're likely to feel worse, not better. Depriving yourself of proper nutrition can cause muscle and bone loss, which can theoretically accelerate the aging process and ultimately compromise your health.  [Weight Loss Tips]

It doesn't seem like all of this is worth the faster weight loss!
