The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that cancer caused 9.6 million deaths in 2018 and is the second highest cause of death globally. This means that each year, six people pass away from cancer.

Cancer was the second-leading cause of death worldwide in 2018, accounting for 9.6 million fatalities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In other words, six people every year pass away from cancer.

As a part of creating awareness about this disease, every year on February 4, 'World Cancer Day' is observed in different countries. Like last year, the theme of the day is 'Close the Gap', which by extension means that errors cannot be kept in cancer treatment.

The start of this day was discussed at the World Cancer Conference held on February 4, 2000 in Paris, France. On that day it was decided to observe 4th February every year as World Cancer Day or World Cancer Awareness Day or World Cancer Prevention Day.

"This year's campaign aims to diagnose the disease early, prevent errors once treatment has started, and manage cancer care globally in a uniform manner. All of them strive to "cross the care gap" in its entirety."
